Oralism experience: Big Misunderstanding!

I wanted to share my most misunderstanding and scary moment simply misunderstanding my own mother. I was about 8 years old and did not know sign language at that time. Oralism is not always effective without sign language. Any one of you who were in Oral background ever have moments like me: misunderstanding.

I was raised oral method during my childhood. You are right, oralism is not effective... probably the least effective of all communication methods for the Deaf. I learned S.E.E., P.S.E., then finally ASL when I entered Gallaudet. Let me tell you... clear and loud... ASL is CHAMP. Period!! I wish I knew ASL in the very beginning. Oh well, better late than never. Thanks for sharing your vlog.

It made me laugh and laugh.
I know that misunderstanding is no funny thing, but the idea that people have to go and copy Jesus on His last day as a mortal tickle me off!
Glad you share that with us. I am a signer and when hearing people try ot speak to me, I always insist strongly that they write to me instead because I am so against oralism because of the possibility you had with your mother.
*laugh laugh*
So sorry but it was hilarious.

Oh, I can relate!!! Once on my first job I was told that a coworker had COLLAPSED and we should all go to the meeting room immediately! I became very concerned and asked, how awful! what is to happen to us now?? I thought it was something in the air since it was a chemical laboratory.
It turned out the coworker had brought fresh CLAMS to share with all others.

Yes, it's true. Same here. Oral then SEE then ASL when I enter Gallaudet. Thanks to Gallaudet that I learn ASL.

Wow! Thanks for sharing your awesome scary story about Jesus! I don't blame you!

Yes, I went through horrible experience with misunderstanding my hearing family at home and oral education, too!

The Oralism professional do not even care about "Left Deaf Child Behind" in both at home and education! The Oralism professionals are responsible for:
1. lack of understanding,
2. lack of earl cognitive language development,
3. lack of self esteem,
4. lack of communication development skills,
5. lack of close bindings from the hearing families,
and possible many more ETC...,...

You did FABULOUS JOB on your vlog! Keep on vlogging because I miss ya for a while!

Smile, SKE

I had a good chuckle this AM when I read your experience...

I, like you and other oral deaf people, have had a share of misunderstandings, which bordered on being funny. Of course we all laugh over these misunderstandings, but oh boy!

Oralism is not always 100% effective. We have spent so many hours to work on oral methods. Many parents have always been very high expectations of their deaf children to hear and speak. We have proved them wrong. Unfortunately, we are in the different "sound" path. It does not help us to identify many words.

Publicity could have hurted many oral schools, audiology offices, doctors and other business. The Oral vs. ASL are in the war zone. The ASL won't let the oralism to take the power over us.

Being a oralism kid was unfair and left out with no understanding what the reality out there is all about. Your experience with your mom about Jesus was such scary to wet your pant. I had have always known how you felt about the ole' days. We all DEAF had go through those bad samples which we had to fellow what the professors thought the best BUT which it was totally wrong. Glad that you showed us an excellent sample what your emotions and your learning task what you had shown us which it never works for all the oral programs around in the counties. At the bottom line, it is about time for us all DEAF to take out of the zone of the colonalism.

Jana,

Ohhhh... so glad you asked me to check out your most recent vlog... oh gosh... that is so funny, yet scary! I cannot imagine you as a child wondering why and what happened...

Yes, communicating a child with an oral method can cause a lot of misunderstandings.. I agree.

I agree with you that Oralism isn't 100% effective! I have been through like that in my childhood.

Thanks for sharing your story, Jana. It was such a powerful point to make that I had my Sign Language students watch this. It made quite an impression!
